Mikel Arteta may need to drop Aubameyang for Gabriel Martinelli

Arsenal legend suggests Mikel Arteta may need to drop Aubameyang for Gabriel Martinelli

Aubameyang disappoints, again

Arsenal’s last outing of course saw them comfortably beaten by Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.

The Merseysiders have had a pretty dire season overall. But were still able to completely dominate Arsenal.

And despite Liverpool still having something of a makeshift backline, the Gunners were limited to just three shots all game, only two of which were on target.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was particularly disappointing against the Reds, something Arsenal fans have become too accustomed to seeing this season.

Martinelli over Aubameyang

Since signing his new contract at the back end of 2020, the Arsenal captain has not looked anywhere close to his best.

And now, after another subpar display against Liverpool, Martin Keown has suggested that Mikel Arteta should perhaps look to drop the African or risk losing the respect of his squad:

Should Arteta not be dropping him for performing as poorly as he did against Liverpool? If he sticks with him, he risks losing the respect of the group.

Keown goes on to write that Arteta should bring in Gabriel Martinelli to play on the left – Aubameyang’s preferred position – alongside Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe, both of whom were absent on Saturday evening vs Liverpool.

It’s time to bring in 19-year-old Gabriel Martinelli. He is too good to be sitting on the bench. His team-mates see him in training and know what he can do.

They will be baffled by his continued absence. I know I am.

Use him on the left. Use Martinelli’s fellow 19-year-old Bukayo Saka on the right. Start Emile Smith Rowe. Then you’ll have a team who can pose problems for the opposition. There were too many passengers against Liverpool.
