TONY ADAMS CLAIMS MARTINEZ TRANSFER DECISION IS BADLY AFFECTING ONE ARSENAL PLAYER NOW
The Arsenal legend made the comments about the Germany international goalkeeper following his performance against Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium in the Premier League at the weekend.
The 29-year-old has made mistakes in recent weeks, and he also committed an error – maybe two? – in the 3-0 defeat to Liverpool in North London.
Adams has said that Arsenal should not have sold Martinez to Aston Villa in the summer of 2020 for a transfer fee reported by The Guardian to be worth £20 million and should have kept him instead to ease the burden on Leno.
The Englishman said about Leno on Stadium Astro, as transcribed by Metro: “We’ve only got Leno, we’re going to play him every single match now until the end of the season and he’s already for me a little bit burnt out
“He could’ve really done with a rest and just played the Europa League stage. I wanted them [Leno and Martinez] to fight for the No.1.”.
Strange claim
Leno has not been exactly great for Arsenal so far this season, but it is hard to see how the German can be tired.
True, the 29-year-old has played 29 times in the Premier League and six times in the Europa League for Arsenal so far this season, according to WhoScored, but he is a goalkeeper.
Leno has to concentrate throughout the 90 minutes and that creates mental pressure, but it is hard to see how a goalkeeper could be physically tired.
The defeat to Liverpool means that Arsenal’s realistic route to playing in the Champions League next season is to win the Europa League.
